Jen (Jim Hensen), the last of the Gelfling race, lives with the gentle Mystics after his parents are killed by evil Skekses. The Skekses are trying to destroy the Gelflings because of an ancient phrophecy that a Gelfling would end their rule. Jen's mentor reveals on his deathbed that Jen must heal the Dark Crystal that gives the Skekses their power. Jen finds the astronomer Aughra (Frank Oz) and receives a missing shard of crystal from her. Further along on his journey, Jen meets Kira (Kathryn Mullen), a female Gelfling who has also survived, and her dog Fizzgig. The two join forces to restore the Dark Crystal to its original purity.
