Baby (Jennifer Gray) visits a summer resort with her family. She tries to get into the resort activities, but she's really more interested in what the owners' preppy nephew calls "the dance people". One night she sees a staff man struggling with two watermelons. He lets her carry one for him into a staff building where everyone is dirty dancing. She sees Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) and his dance partner, Penny, come in. Baby dances with Johnny. Baby finds out that Penny is pregnant and wants an abortion. Baby gets the money from her father, a prominent doctor (Jerry Orbach). Baby offers to learn Penny's dances so that she can sub for her while she recovers. She spends many hours with Johnny learning the dances and falling in love. Penny is badly hurt by the abortion, so Baby brings her father to help her. Her father immediately assumes that Johnny was the baby's father, and doesn't want Baby seeing him. She sneaks to his cabin anyway. Nearing the close of the season a woman who's jealous of Johnny turns him in as a thief. Johnny is subsequently fired, even when it's learned who the real thieves are. He leaves. Baby mopes. Then at the closing night ceremony, Johnny comes to reclaim Baby, and they dance for the entire gathering.
